According to PunchNG, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, announced this news at the Future Investment Initiative New Africa Summit in Saudi Arabia. He emphasized the role of entrepreneurship in addressing pressing issues like unemployment and infrastructure deficits in Africa.
Also, in a LinkedIn post, Elumelu shared his insights from a fireside chat with CNN host Eleni Giokos. He explained how Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation are implementing Africapitalism by empowering young African entrepreneurs with $5,000 grants, mentorship, and training to help them build successful businesses.
According to Elumelu, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has empowered 20,000 young African entrepreneurs, who have collectively created over 400,000 jobs to date. This initiative embodies the essence of Africapitalism, a philosophy that emphasizes the role of the private sector in driving Africa’s economic growth.
Elumelu’s optimism stems from his own entrepreneurial experiences and the successes of the entrepreneurs supported by his foundation. He believes that by empowering young Africans, the continent can overcome its challenges and achieve sustainable development.
However, he stated that capital was not the only challenge that young Africans face in business. He emphasized the need for reliable electricity, tax reforms, and policies that support entrepreneurship to foster economic growth.
