FG Unveils 5-Year Health and Safety Plan for Workers

The Federal Government has launched a comprehensive five-year National Occupational Health and Safety Plan (2024-2028) aimed at enhancing worker safety and productivity.

The plan, launched by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom in Abuja on Tuesday, seeks to address the growing need for improved workplace health and safety standards in Nigeria.

The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to international labor standards, particularly the ILO conventions on safe working environments and workplace violence and harassment.

“Nigeria is a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), it complies with the ratification of conventions, treaties and policies related to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), “Pate stated.

The National Occupational Health and Safety Strategic Plan (2024–2028) is designed to provide clear guidance to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, as well as other key stakeholders,” Pate continued.

He highlighted the importance of these conventions in protecting workers’ rights and ensuring their well-being.

The 5-year plan will guide the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, as well as other relevant stakeholders, in implementing strategies to:

  • Reduce workplace accidents and injuries
  • Prevent work-related illnesses
  • Improve access to occupational health services
  • Foster a healthy and safe work environment

By prioritizing occupational health and safety, the government aims to create a more productive and sustainable workforce, ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
